How to apply for jobs in Germany:

Sending a resume is not that easy. You have to meet specific requirements. This makes the whole process very rigorous, or as my German husband calls it, "efficient". Since I used to be a Quality Assurance Manager, here is my standard operating procedure for applying for a job in Germany. Deviate from these rules at your own risk.

Check Your Chances

A quick check on the Make It in Germany website will pinpoint your chances of working in Germany. There is a demand for doctors, nursing staff, engineers, mechatronics technicians, IT specialists, and train drivers among others. Before you start looking for a job, it is best to first clarify whether you need a visa to work in Germany.

Recognize Your Qualifications

This can be useful for many jobs, and some require that a professional or educational qualification from your home country be recognized in Germany. You can check whether this applies to you on the Recognition in Germany website.
Look for a Job
Job listings on the Make It in Germany website detail vacancies where international specialists are clearly sought. You can also search for jobs on the Federal Employment Agency's website, among major job exchanges such as Stepstone, Indeed, and Monster, or among vacancies published on business networks such as LinkedIn or Xing. If you are interested in specific companies, look for vacancies directly on their corporate websites.

Write an Application

Typically, an application to a German company includes a covering letter, a photograph, a CV with certificates, and testimonials. Make sure you have the required qualifications and emphasize them in your cover letter.

Apply for Visa

Citizens of EU countries, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Iceland do not need a visa to work in Germany.
Are you a citizen of Australia, Canada, Israel, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, or the United States? You can then enter Germany without a visa and stay for up to three months. If you want to work here, you will need to apply for a residence permit which allows you to take gainful employment.
Citizens of all other countries require a visa. You should only apply for one when you already have a contract of employment in Germany. Make an appointment at the German embassy in your home country and inform your prospective employer that it may take some time for all visa formalities to be completed.

If you have a recognized higher education qualification in Germany, you can obtain a six-month visa to look for a job.

Get Health Insurance

Health insurance is mandatory in Germany, and it applies from the first day of your stay.
Here you will find checklists to help you find work in Germany.
